The lotus is an important Buddhist symbol. Symbolising purity, it rises out of the mud but remains pure and beautiful. The lotus represents the ordinary person who is born and raised in a polluted environment, but who has the potential to learn and rise above the pollution. If the lotus rises high enough, then it reaches the surface and can fully realize it's potential.
